  • Kolkata: The temperature started dipping in Kolkata on Sunday even as it remained cloudy and humid. With a high-pressure zone over Bay of Bengal, which was infusing moisture into the region, receding, the maximum temperature slid to 26.6°C from Saturday's 27.4°C. The minimum temperature dropped from 22.6°C to 22.1°C. It is still 6.5°C above normal.

The minimum may drop to 20°C on Monday. "We expect a further drop from Tuesday. The minimum may slide to 18°C during this spell. Since the moisture incursion has stopped and the northwesterly has revived slightly, the chill will return partially. But it will be a short period and the mercury will crawl up again. This temperature fluctuation will continue for at least a week," said RMC weather scientist Sourish Bandopadhyay.

This Jan was the warmest in Kolkata in the last 15 years. While the lowest temperatures recorded last month were among the highest in 15 years for the month, the cold spells didn't last more than two to three days.
