  • 123 Kolkata: One person has been arrested on Sunday in connection with the brutal murder of businessman and Trinamool leader Santosh Yadav at Naihati in North24-Parganas.

Yadav, a resident of Naihati's Gouripur and was associated with transport business was shot and battered with a brick in broad daylight in a crowded locality at Naihati's Jorabari-Banerjee Para while he was returning home in a Toto rickshaw on Friday afternoon.

Police said one of the FIR named accused Akshay Gon was arrested on Sunday.

"A CCTV footage revealed that Gon, the brother-in-law of the prime accused Rajesh Shaw, accompanied by five others, including the Shaw came on two motorbikes and carried out a brutal attack on Yadav which led to his murder. A raid is on to nab others, while four more suspects have been detained. Prima facie, it appears that an old rivalry could have led to the murder," a senior police officer of the Barrackpore Commissionerate said.

The arrest comes a day after Barrackpore Police commissioner Alok Rajoria was replaced by senior IPS officer Ajay Kumar Thakur on Saturday.

Four more suspects have been detained in connection with the murder.

Yadav's daylight murder has escalated political tensions in the area, leading to a heated exchange between TMC and BJP leaders. Violence erupted as several houses were set on fire.

Amidst the ongoing unrest, Bengal BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar visited Naihati on Sunday morning and expressed outrage over the police's inaction. He claimed that 20 to 25 houses had been vandalized and set on fire. He further asserted that the attack was an act of retaliation.
