  • Malda: Veteran Trinamool Congress MLA and former minister Sabitri Mitra on Sunday alleged she had been attacked while returning to English Bazaar from her constituency Manikchak on Saturday night. Mitra lodged a formal complaint with the party seniors and police, claiming there was a threat to her life and that she suspected "some influential" individuals behind it.

Mitra attended a programme at Enayetpur under Manikchak police station on Saturday. She was returning to her English Bazaar residence when around 10.30 pm, her car was hit by another car at Chandipur. "It could have been fatal if my driver had not been alert. He somehow averted a larger collision," said the MLA. "I thought it was just an accident, and we moved on. But after a few metres, we found the car again ahead of us, deliberately slowing its pace to be with us. There were a number of youths in the car. The Malda-Manikchak state highway was deserted. We turned the car, heading straight to the Milki police outpost," she added.

"They had some ill intention. They know I frequent my area and return late at night. Only two security staff are there with me. I feel unsafe after the incident," Mitra said. Police are probing the incident and are looking for the car following the description provided by Mitra. Sources claimed one person was nabbed on Sunday, although police did not confirm it.

Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "She (Mitra) is a very senior neta. She has spoken about it, and she has also lodged a complaint with the party leadership. The party has nothing to comment on this issue."
