A 20-year-old student of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was found dead inside her room at the staff quarters of Kamarhati ESI Hospital in North 24 Parganas district Thursday night. According to the police, the woman lived there with her mother, an employee of the hospital, while her father, a bank official, is posted in Mumbai.

“Her mother works in ESI Hospital and they used to stay together. An investigation has been initiated,” said a Barrackpore police officer.

Police reports indicate the student was alone in her room when the incident occurred. Her mother became concerned after failing to reach her and, when she entered the house, she found her daughter’s body. She was taken to the hospital where doctors pronounced her dead.

The police said no suicide note was found, and that they have registered a case of unnatural death. While preliminary reports suggest the student may have been suffering from depression, leading to suspicions of suicide, the police said they are continuing their investigation and have not ruled out other possibilities.

As per the police, the family didn’t register any complaint, and cremated the body.

The incident follows the rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor at R G Kar Hospital on August 9 last year.
