Kolkata: Two persons were injured and had to be hospitalised and four individuals were arrested following a late-night altercation that took place in front of a Saraswati Puja pandal on Suresh Sarkar Road, close to the Anand Palit Road crossing, in Entally on Sunday.
The fracas took place around 10.30 pm on Sunday. It was triggered by a simple argument between local festival participants and a group of bikers. According to police reports, a group of local youths was dancing near the puja pandal, reportedly blocking a large portion of the road. When the bikers attempted to pass through the area, they couldn't drive past the revellers. What started as a verbal dispute over the right of passage quickly evolved into an altercation between the two groups.
"The incident represents a common challenge during festival seasons when religious celebrations and regular traffic movement try to coexist in our narrow streets," said a senior police officer, adding that such skirmishes have been reported from here even in the past.
Following a formal complaint, the Entally Police Station registered a case on Monday and detained several individuals. Four of them were shown as arrested after multiple rounds of questioning.
The accused, from both the groups, were charged under multiple sections of the BNS Act.
