  • TMC MLA Sabitri Mitra was allegedly chased by an unidentified person in a car while she was being driven somewhere on Saturday night. After the escape, on Sunday night, the Manik chowk MLA informed the party’s state leadership that she was “being attacked to be murdered”.

It is alleged that a car coming near Dharampur in the English Bazar police station area of Maldah started “chasing her car”. Mitra claimed that the “quickness of her driver saved” her. She said that her car then stopped in a crowded area and then informed Manik chowk police and Milki police.

Police arrived at the English Bazar police station and started an investigation. Mitra told The Indian Express, “Police are doing their duty. I have full faith in the administration.”

A senior Maldah district police official said, “We are exploring every aspect. We have already seized a car and detained a person. We are expecting to solve the case within two days.”

Mitra said, “State (TMC) president Subrata Bakshi is our guardian. Last night, I informed him about the accident, which was not natural. I informed him how a car wanted to kill me. I informed him through mobile messaging.”

In Maldah district, two TMC leaders were killed in two separate attacks in January. In the first incident, TMC councilor Dulal Sarkar was shot dead by miscreants at English Bazar. Police arrested Narendranath Tiwari, the TMC Maldah city president, who was later expelled from the party. Second, TMC leader Bakul Sheikh and activist Asaruddin Sheikh were attacked while attending the inauguration of a drainage system and road in the new slum area of Kaliachowk. A TMC worker named Hasan Sheikh was killed in the attack.

A senior leader of Maldah said, “After such attacks, Sabitri Mitra is probably afraid. That is why she informed state leadership even before district leadership.” However, Mitra declined to comment on this.
