Two days after a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker, Santosh Yadav, was shot dead in broad daylight in the Gauripur area of Naihati police station in North 24 Parganas district, the police have arrested one person in connection with the case.
The police apprehended Akshay Gana within the Naihati police station area on Sunday, Four more persons have also been detained for questioning, sources in the police said.
Gana was produced at the Barrackpore Sub-Divisional Court and has been sent to police custody, an official said.
Commissioner of Barrackpore Police Commissionerate Ajay Kumar Thakur, who visited the Naihati police station on Saturday night, reviewed the murder case diary and details related to Yadav’s murder.
He also met with the officers in charge and urged them to expedite the investigation.
The West Bengal government on Saturday named Thakur as the new commissioner of the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, replacing Alok Rajoria, an official said.
Meanwhile, after the murder of the TMC worker, unrest and tension still continue in Naihati as several houses were vandalised in the area.
Amid tension in the area, state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar visited Naihati on Sunday and hit out at the police.
Claiming that nearly 20 to 25 houses were vandalised and many houses were set on fire following the murder of Yadav, he alleged, “This was done by hired men. (CM) Mamata Banerjee’s police did not come even once. The police came because Sukanta Majumdar had come. But, never came to investigate.”
Majumdar said, “The one who was killed (Yadav) opened fire in 2021. If you shoot at me, you will be shot today or tomorrow. This is the rule of the world. There will be an equal and opposite reaction.”
BJP leader and party’s former MP Arjun Singh said, “This is the fight of gangsters and it is between a group of people having personal rivalry.”
However, countering the allegations TMC’s Jagatdal MLA Somenath Shyam said, “The people who have been captured on CCTV are people close to Arjun Singh. You will never see anyone close to me committing murder, but people who are close to him are into all this.”
TMC worker Yadav (40) was murdered on Friday after he was was dragged out of an auto-rickshaw and attacked by motorcycle borne assailants, said police. As per sources he was first hit with bricks on his head and then the goons shot him after he fell down.
