Kolkata: A CISF constable hanged himself in the office of the deputy commandant at the airport on Wednesday morning after losing Rs 30 lakh in online gaming and the share market. Raghunath Paul, originally from Hirapur in East Burdwan, left behind a suicide note.
Paul, who was posted at Kolkata airport since June 2022 and was working as a company writer in the office of the deputy commandant (cargo and parameter area), came to the office at 8.30 am on Wednesday. Around 10 am, other CISF personnel found the door to the office bolted from within. When their knocks did not elicit a response, they forced open the door and found Paul hanging from the ceiling fan.
In the suicide note, Paul wrote that he had lost Rs 30 lakh in online gaming and the share market, and did not have money to repay it.
Paul is survived by his wife and two children — an 11-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son.
He used to live with his family in a rented apartment in Narayanpur. CISF officers said Paul took leave four times in the past year, negating any possibility of leave being denied as the cause of him taking the drastic step, as has happened in some instances in the past.
Officers of NSCBI airport police station said they have started an unnatural death case. "He was regularly failing to pay EMIs. We are probing if he was being bothered by loan recovery agents. We are also checking if he took out loans from some other sources and if they were creating any sort of pressure on him," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar Commissionerate.
