• JU polls to include students in ICC
    Times of India | 6 February 2025
  • Kolkata: In a first, Jadavpur University is set to hold elections to elect student representatives for the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) that handles sexual harassment complaints and other forms of discrimination at workplaces.

A source said the meeting would probably take place on Feb 18.

The move comes after continuous protests from students, who have been demanding transparency and proper functioning of the complaints committee.

The secretary of the Arts unit, SFI JU local committee, Abhinaba Basu said, "It was our demand for a long time to restructure the ICC and conduct elections to include students' representatives so that the committee can function properly according to UGC guidelines. Previously, student representatives were nominated from the elected members of the students' union. But no student union election has been conducted for more than five years. Through this ICC election, students' representatives will become members of the committee instead of being just observers. They can take decisions, too."

Dean of students Rajat Ray said, "Students' representatives to the ICC shall be elected separately for UG and PG students, faculty-wise. The meeting of the advisory committee of the ICC shall be held shortly to discuss the ICC elections."
