  • 12 Kolkata: A scooterist's accident on Darga Road on Tuesday prompted the Kolkata Traffic Police to crack down on rule violators—especially those speeding and overtaking—to ensure safety for the students at two popular schools in the area. Cops also put up guard rails for an hour on Wednesday morning to enforce lane-driving.

Police said they slapped fines for dangerous driving, targeting app vehicles and bikes that tended to break rules the most. "We fined six such mini buses Rs 5,000 together," said an officer, adding speeding in front of schools would not be tolerated. About setting up guard rails in the morning, an officer said, "Whenever Maa Flyover shuts down, vehicles from Suhrawardy Avenue try to take Darga Road. But the road can't handle such pressure."

The crackdown followed the Tuesday accident, which occurred when an app-based minibus tried to overtake vehicles on Darga Road. "The bus was headed for Bridge No. 4. The biker was coming from the opposite direction. The bus driver jumped the mid-road line and crossed over to the opposite flank, crashing into the scooterist. The minibus driver braked at the last moment, saving the scooterist's life," said an officer.
