  • Kolkata: To keep Kolkata's iconic yellow taxis on roads, but with a modern twist and an eco-friendly turn, the state govt allowed all luxury cabs to adopt the classic yellow colour. The first 150 clean-fuel, yellow taxis will hit the city streets shortly, according to an MoU signed between transport secretary Saumitra Mohan and NA Mobility director Hasibul Hussain at BGBS on Thursday.

"We are introducing clean fuel yellow taxis, which can soon be booked on the govt Yatri Sathi app. These CNG-powered taxis will later be accessible on Uber and Ola as well," Hussain said. "Our goal is to preserve the city's iconic yellow taxi and rehabilitate metered taxi drivers. We welcome all such drivers to be part of this initiative. While these cabs will be automatically integrated with Yatri Sathi, drivers are free to join other ride-hailing services as well."

To expand the initiative, NA Mobility planned to introduce 100 yellow taxis every month, building a sizeable fleet, said Biplab Kumar Singha, another director of the company.

Clean mobility received further boost with BiGo signing an MoU to introduce a fleet of electric bike taxis. "BiGo's sectors of fleet ownership, infrastructure development, driver training, and operations management, ensure reliability and sustainability," said Ankit Jalan, BiGo founder. "BiGo is empowering businesses to move smarter and faster. The MoU we signed was a testament to the state's commitment to fostering entrepreneurship and innovation," said co-founder Ankit Nevatia. Along with Prateek Agrawal, the BioGo team brings extensive experience in automotive, business management and IT to the city.
