  • 123 Kolkata: Given the number of cases under the Pocso Act in the state, there is a requirement for 25 exclusive Pocso courts. Out of these, 15 such courts were sanctioned, Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court T S Sivagnanam said on Thursday during the inauguration of the exclusive Pocso court at Tamluk.

Law minister Moloy Ghatak said that out of the 15 sanctioned, seven are running. He assured that the state would meet the immediate requirement of setting up 15 such courts, and thereafter the target of 25.

The judges' committee, after reviewing the requirement for the number of Pocso courts in the state, informed a requirement of a minimum of 50 Pocso courts. Subsequently, it was scaled down considering the paucity of space, and they proposed at least 25 such courts to be established in the state. The Chief Justice requested the law minister to take note of this so that the state can be put on the national map "leading by example".

Located on the fifth floor of the new court building at Tamluk, it has been provided with 350 square feet space and facilities, including a separate entry for the victim child and accused, a child-friendly room, and a waiting area for the guardians. The courtroom is also equipped with video recording and conferencing equipment.
