  • 12 Kolkata: The demolition of the G+3 tilted building near Baghajatin in south Kolkata that began three weeks ago will take at least another month, a supervisor of the private agency entrusted by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to raze the collapsed structure told TOI on Thursday.

Workers employed to pull down the dangerously leaning structure said progress was slow as they had to exercise extreme caution to ensure the safety of residents in the adjoining buildings. "It's a densely populated neighbourhood where some apartment buildings were constructed without keeping mandatory open space. So we can't take chances in razing the building in haste," the supervisor said.

According to him, while the demolition of the top floor took a long time, the rest of work could gather pace after ensuring that no structural damage occurs to an adjacent G+2 residential building. But those living in that building are scared as they witnessed the horrifying scene of the building almost collapse on their house. According to an official, the mayor instructed to build one-room homes for the homeless flat owners as a temporary solution. "We are waiting for demolition work to be over," said the official.
