TERI MoU with state to boost green energy transition

Kolkata: The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) will collaborate with Bengal's non-conventional and renewable energy resources (NRES) department to accelerate energy transition by embracing green energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
In an MoU signed between the state's NRES department and TERI on Thursday, the two have jointly identified areas for collaboration, which include new and innovative renewable energy applications such as floating solar, agriPV, BIPV, as well as clean tech manufacturing within the state.
Recently, TERI, with support from the Union power ministry, established an Institute of Energy Transition (IoET) at its Hyderabad campus. This institute will work both at national and state levels as a catalyst for clean energy adoption, enabling India to lead the global transition to a low-carbon economy. The ultimate aim is to put the state on the road to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
As part of the ongoing Energy Storage for Renewable Energy Integration in India (StoREin) initiative, TERI will work with the state NRES department to explore grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Bengal, as well as pilot demonstrations of BESS technologies. TERI will also work with the West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) to explore the role of energy storage in electric bus charging and for electric ferries in Kolkata.
The MoU signed by NRES department additional chief secretary Barun Kumar Ray and TERI senior fellow and senior director (Electrical and Renewables Division Energy Programme) Ajay Kumar Saxena deals with the following areas of mutual interest: renewable energy (including solar rooftop, ground-mounted solar power plant, waste-to-energy, wind); grid integration studies; energy storage; energy efficiency and demand-side management; integrated demand and supply projections; innovative solutions (including smart grid, agro-voltaics, floating solar); and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
