  • The parents of the deceased R G Kar doctor have appealed to people to “hit the streets” on her birthday, February 9, to protest “the delay in justice” for her.

In a video statement, the mother of the rape-murder case victim recalled how the victim spent her last three birthdays in medical colleges. “Our child’s dreams were finished and everything that she had achieved through hard work has been destroyed. The day she would have turned 32, we will hit the streets…”

“We appeal to all working in hospitals, both state-run and private ones, to light lamps… My daughter used to love flowers a lot, so I will request people to plant one flower plant at their homes and workplaces.”

She also thanked everybody who has “supported and stood by” them in their demands for justice since the incident took place on August 9 last year.

In December 2024, the parents of the R G Kar rape and murder victim moved the Calcutta High Court seeking a fresh investigation into the murder of their daughter.

In court, their counsel stated that the parents of the deceased doctor do not have confidence in the investigation led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). They appealed to the court to order a fresh investigation “soon” as all the evidence “has disappeared in the name of this investigation”.

A Sealdah court sentenced lone convict Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, to life imprisonment on January 20, 2025. Following this, the state government and the CBI moved the Calcutta HC demanding capital punishment for Roy, and the court sought the parents’ opinion.

The legal counsel of the parents said they did not want the death penalty for Roy, but “further investigation”, and for “all those involved to be booked.”

Sandip Ghosh, former principal of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondol, then officer-in-charge of Tala police station, were granted bail in the case by a court in Kolkata on December 14 after the CBI failed to submit a charge sheet within 90 days. On September 14, the CBI arrested them for allegedly tampering with evidence in the case and allegedly trying to “hush up” the incident.
