12 Kolkata: Around 5am on Thursday, a patrolling party of the 146th Battalion at Jalangi outpost spotted 6-7 infiltrators attempting to cross into Bangladesh.
"Acting swiftly, the BSF troops managed to apprehend two of them — both Bangladeshi nationals — while the others fled back. When interrogated, they revealed they had five more Bangladeshi accomplices who had managed to escape earlier that morning," said the BSF South Bengal spokesperson.
Further questioning disclosed that they were attempting to cross the border illegally with the help of a tout from the Indian border village of Madhubana. During questioning, a call received on a mobile phone recovered from the apprehended men gave the whereabouts of the tout. BSF personnel devised a swift strategy to trap the tout.
"One of the arrested Bangladeshis was instructed to communicate with the tout and assured him that they were safe and hiding near the Customs Office in Jalangi. Thereafter, the broker was called there and was caught. He gave away that the five Bangladeshi nationals who had escaped were hiding in a banana plantation near Gopalpur Ghat," said the official.
This time, the personnel disguised themselves as civilians and reached the designated location using an auto-rickshaw and an ambulance. The tout was instructed to call the hidden Bangladeshi nationals and convince them to come out, assuring them that the situation was safe. All five came out of hiding and BSF troops immediately nabbed them.
It was revealed that these touts were charging each person Rs 7,000 to illegally cross the border.
The captured tout was asked to call the other two touts involved and arrange a meeting at Chichinia More. BSF personnel, disguised as Bangladeshi infiltrators, went to the area and arrested the duo. "During the arrest, one of the touts attempted to attack BSF personnel with a sharp weapon but was immediately overpowered," said the official.
Later on Thursday night, BSF personnel at Bajitpur in Murshidabad found a severely injured person on the border, shortly after a group was spotted fighting among themselves. BSF took him to the nearest hospital where he was pronounced dead
Sources said the man turned out to be a Bangladeshi national. Sources added that the incident site in the deserted sandy area of the Bhagirathi river, which is quite far from the international border, has been witnessing criminal activities. A source said the person may have died due to a dispute with his criminal associates.
