12 Kolkata: A 25-year-old woman lawyer was attacked with a sharp weapon by some drivers after she protested against illegal parking near her home. She sustained injuries on her arm and shoulder and five stitches had to be administered, her mother told TOI on Friday.
The incident took place on Gobinda Banerjee Lane, 200m from the Prince Anwar Shah crossing, on Thursday.
While the victim lodged a complaint of hurt and molestation at the Charu Market police station, the accused filed a complaint too, alleging illegal constructions by the lawyer's father. They alleged when they had raised the issue, he had verbally abused a woman in the locality and molested her.
"We registered a case based on a hurt and molestation complaint by the lawyer. Two cases—one by the mother of a neighbour allegedly molested by the lawyer's father and one by another neighbour who witnessed the alleged molestation—have been filed. All the accused are on the run," said Priyobrata Roy, DC (South).
The lawyer's mother said commercial vehicles were illegally parked in their narrow lane, leaving little space for others. "My daughter, who practises at Alipore court, has a chamber less than 100m from our house. She has been protesting against this for some time. Around 5 pm on Thursday, some of the drivers confronted my husband near her chamber. As my daughter intervened, the argument escalated and one of the men slashed at her with a sharp weapon," her mother said. The victim was taken to M R Bangur Hospital, where she was treated and discharged. "A group of men surrounded me. They assaulted and threatened me," the victim stated in her complaint.
The accused in their complaint alleged that the lawyer's father undertook illegal constructions. "Her family bribes local authorities for constructions without permits. When we protested, he abused us and the women with us," claimed an accused driver. The lawyer's father, who runs a small business and dabbles in realty, denied the charge.
