After BMC delay, JU gets speed bumps near Salt Lake campus
Times of India | 9 February 2025
12 Kolkata: Jadavpur University (JU) students blocked a road in front of the Salt Lake campus on Friday and constructed a speed breaker there after a man was run over at the spot the night before.
The students claimed that they were forced to do so as multiple alerts from the university authorities to Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on the need for a speed breaker went unheard. On Saturday, BMC workers started constructing speed breakers at other spots that the students had demanded.
Sources said JU wrote a letter to the BMC chairman last Sept, informing him about at least eight damaged or ineffective speed breakers ahead of the campus posing a risk to students' lives."Students are terrified to cross the road and accidents can occur any time," the letter cited, while requesting the BMC to take "immediate action for reconstruction of the speed breakers."
Fourth-year construction engineering student, Subhasis Shit said, "After the Thursday night incident, we went to the JU authorities to know about the status of the repair. On learning about BMC's deaf ears to the multiple requests made by the university, we started blocking the road from 2 pm, demanding immediate repair. A BMC engineer came to the spot and told us that the work could begin either on Monday or Tuesday due to necessary protocols. Thus, we were forced to take the matter into our own hands and after 5 pm, we bought bricks, cement and sand from construction of the speed breaker."
Meanwhile, a notice on the JU website states that ‘car movement through JU Salt Lake Campus Main Gate and CAB Gate will not be possible' between Feb 8 and 10 as BMC will construct the speed breaker on the road in front of JU Salt Lake campus.
