12 Kolkata: Following last month's high court order, the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has allotted space to 260 hawkers at the hawkers' market near TCS-Gitanjali in New Town as part of a continuous rehabilitation initiative.
So far, more than 1,400 hawkers and vendors have been rehabilitated across New Town. A survey conducted by the civic body last year has revealed New Town has3,133 hawkers. Out of them, the authorities are working to rehabilitate 1,887 listed hawkers.
"ID cards will be issued to the unlisted hawkers so that they can be rehabilitated later," an official said. NKDA is also building a market complex-cum-community hall at BG Block in Action Area I.
