Kalyani: Raids were conducted on Friday night at the homes of operators of an illegal firecracker unit and at various locations in Rathtala, confiscating substantial quantities of firecracker material, said a Ranaghat police district officer. This came after an explosion at an illegal cracker manufacturing unit in Rathtala killed four women. Meanwhile, Kalyani Municipality chairman Nilimesh Roy Chowdhury said: "Fire licence is given by the fire department, not by municipality. However, we have formed a committee to look into the matter."
TMC councillor Subrata Chakraborty told TOI that Rathtala was once known for Mahabir Cracker Factory and the area housed over 100 auxiliary units. Following Mahabir's closure a decade ago, one or two facilities remained. Chakraborty, however, said authorities were not aware of Biswas's operations.
Nadia divisional fire officer Subrata Guha confirmed the presence of 10-12 licensed facilities across Kalyani, Ranaghat, Krishnanagar and Tehatta subdivisions, and that numerous unlicensed units operated near authorised facilities.
