• Impasse ends in Bengali film and TV industry; directors’ body agrees to resume shooting from Monday

  • The prevailing impasse in the Bengali film and television industry that started following the ‘disruption’ of director Srijit Roy’s shooting earlier this month ended Saturday. The Directors Association of Eastern India (DAEI), which had called for an indefinite strike since Thursday, decided to resume shooting following a meeting with two state ministers — Aroop Biswas and Indranil Sen — on Saturday.

Biswas and Sen stressed that the film industry is a big family and that problems can be solved through talks and negotiations.

Earlier in the month, Srijit Roy had taken to Facebook Live to allege that certain individuals were intentionally hindering his production. Previously, directors Kaushik Ganguly and Joydip Mukherjee’s productions also faced difficulties owing to a ‘shortage’ of available technicians.

Some DAEI members alleged that they were being targeted for criticising certain directives of the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India. They complained that technicians were being asked to ‘boycott’ their shootings, resulting in significant financial damage.

Senior filmmaker Sudeshna Roy had then remarked, “We feel insulted at the turn of events. Directors are called captains of the ship. Filmmakers like Kaushik Ganguly (winner of several national awards) don’t deserve such treatment. It will be in the fitness of things that directors also stay away from shoots unless our demands are looked into in writing.”

Later, after the meeting with the ministers, Srijit Roy said, “I made a comment on social media… I am sincerely saying that it was not my intention to target someone or any person. I am sorry if anyone was hurt. I think we are one family.”
