  • A day after a massive blast ripped through a firecracker factory killing four people in West Bengal’s Kalyani, the Fire Brigade Saturday stated that the factory lacked proper certification to produce firecrackers.

On Friday, the local civic body had claimed that the unit had permission to produce firecrackers.

The factory was located in a congested residential area in the Rathtala neighbourhood of Kalyani. The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the kin of the deceased. Among the four dead, three were women. Another woman who suffered injuries in the explosion is currently under treatment.

The police arrested factory owner Khokan Biswas on Friday night and produced him in court on Saturday after a medical check-up. Biswas has been remanded in police custody for four days.

The investigators were trying to find out why a large amount of firecrackers was stored at the factory. The site has been cordoned off and a large number of policemen has been deployed in the area.
