Kolkata: Two employees were arrested for allegedly stealing money from a well-known biryani outlet in Park Circus. Based on a complaint by the eatery, the Beniapukur cops arrested the two accused — Prasenjit Maiti and Sheikh Gulam Nabi Azad.
However, there were objections over a section of restaurant staffers assaulting the two before handing them over to police. Human rights activists have now sought a probe into the incident.
According to police, accused Prasenjit worked as a waiter at the restaurant while Gulam joined as a cashier two months ago. The restaurant authorities discovered that these two employees were transferring customer payments to their e-wallets.
Prasenjit stopped reporting for work after he suspected he was found stealing. Gulam was lured and called to the restaurant. The arrested individuals informed the police that they had siphoned around Rs 1 lakh. "Instead of providing the company's e-wallet details, they gave their own numbers," an officer said.
According to the accused's lawyer, the restaurant authorities initially lodged a police complaint. Subsequently, several employees beat up Gulam. When Prasenjit turned himself in after the alleged "assault", the duo was taken to the police station. However, police are also probing if they were assaulted.
