The counsel of former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, on Monday accused the CBI of not providing all the documents related to the chargesheet in the case of alleged financial irregularities at the state-run hospital during the tenure of his client.
Ghosh, currently in jail, is one of the accused in the case.
In a submission before the trial court, Ghosh’s counsel Joseph Rauf said: “The CBI is always misguiding and misrepresenting the court. They have to give all the documents and statements of the witnesses. They haven’t done that. Documents that were filed here on the first day were 70%. But the next day, the CBI said all the documents had been given.”
“Why are material facts suppressed by the CBI? Some registers were not given. The CBI should be issued show-cause notice. The CBI has not given copies. It has suppressed our emails,” the lawyer told the court.
On hearing the charges, the special CBI judge reprimanded Ghosh’s counsel, saying: “We’re not here to see faults of either side… This isn’t a political platform where you can raise your voice. You cannot talk like this against an agency. Give in writing.”
The CBI’s counsel, on the other hand, accused Ghosh’s counsel of “always complaining”. “He is having problems. No one else has had problems. We will provide the documents,” the CBI’s counsel told the court.
The judge then reprimanded the CBI, directing the central probe agency to provide the documents immediately.
“Where are your scanned copies? If the scanned copy is ready with you, provide it right now. Ask your representative (CBI) to bring the documents,” the judge told the CBI counsel.
The court ordered the CBI to provide the deficient documents to the counsels of the accused by 4 pm on Monday by email and in pen drive. Last Friday, the Calcutta High Court gave two days’ time to Ghosh and four other accused to go through the documents submitted by the CBI after taking cognisance of more time required
to go through the “voluminous documents”.
