12 Kolkata: Love is not just in the air; it is in the economy too. As Feb 14 approaches, Kolkata's streets and shelves — and now even the quick commerce platforms — have started donning a romantic avatar with shades of red setting the stage for Valentine's Day.
Many florists are designing personalised bouquets while pubs and cafes have curated special menus. Quick commerce platforms have introduced dedicated shopping lists while salons and parlours are offering discounts.
"Starting from Rose Day up until Valentine's Day is a good business period for us. We not only cater to couples but also receive bulk orders from corporate clients, event planners for parties in the city, and even restaurants looking to create a romantic ambiance for diners," said Shreyansh Jain, owner of Ranisha Flowers on Wood Street.
From Mullickghat Flower Market to New Market to Gariahat, florists witnessed an uptick in sales compared to last year. "The sales picked up from Rose Day, and we expect it to peak on Valentine's Day. Rose remains the most popular flower with couples, with other flowers, too, joining the fray," said Minu Sethia, owner of Floral Universe in Kankurgachhi. A single red rose is selling for anything between Rs 40 and Rs 60.
Quick commerce platforms have dedicated sections for Valentine's Day shopping, which includes everything from flowers and chocolates to personalised gifts and self-grooming kits. "Many young professionals in the city don't have time to go out and buy gifts. Many schools and colleges are having exams, so students cannot step out to buy gifts. So they just order everything online, and the gift reaches the homes of their partners," said Anirban Das, an event manager in the city who organises several Valentine's Day parties.
Several cafes, pubs, bakers, and restaurants have curated special menus for Feb 14. Pub 97 in Sector V, Roots on Chowringhee Road, and Club Makati on Harrington Street are organising special parties on Valentine's Day. "Couples are already reserving tables," said Mohammad Nadim Siddique of The Makati.
Chocolates remain a classic Valentine's Day gift, with both local confectioners and big brands witnessing increased demand. Several artisanal and home-grown bakers are offering personalised hampers as well.
