12 Suri: Nine people were arrested in connection with a clash between two groups at Jamalpur village under Kankartala police station on Tuesday, and officer-in-charge Purnendubikash Das was ‘closed' to the police line. Dubrajpur circle inspector Subhasish Haldar was assigned responsibility in his place. Additionally, Birbhum SP Amandeep issued a strong directive to maintain law and order in the area.
Crude bombs were allegedly hurled on Tuesday during a dispute between the two groups over money related to illegal extraction of sand from the Ajay river. Sheikh Saktar Ali was injured in the incident and according to administrative sources, his right leg had to be amputated.
A total of nine people, including Trinamool functionary Swapan Sen, were arrested. They were presented before Dubrajpur court on Wednesday. The court remanded two of them in police custody and the others in judicial custody.
Anup Saha, BJP MLA from Dubrajpur said, ‘This was a clash between two factions of Trinamool over money collected from illegal sand dealings. The administration should investigate how such a large number of bombs were brought to the area."
Trinamool district president Anubrata Mondal said, "We urge the police to immediately shut down all illegal sand mines across the district."
