Kolkata: A jewellery store owner in Burrabazar fell victim to a sophisticated cyber fraud scheme, involving fake payment screenshots, marking the latest in a series of similar incidents across the city.
OnJan 27, a middle-aged man selected a gold chain worth Rs 60,000 for purchase from the victim's shop. Instead of paying cash, the suspect insisted on making an online payment through an e-wallet. "The fraudster used a counterfeit payment app that generated fake transaction confirmation messages," cops said. But no actual transaction took place.
"We advise all to wait for actual credit confirmation from banks rather than relying on instant payment notifications," cops said. Probe is on. tnn
