  • 1234 Kolkata: The state govt has entrusted the Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) with the task of beautification and maintenance of the median stretch of Maa flyover from near Chingrighata to Park Circus 4 No Bridge via Science City crossing. This comes after the median stretch of Salt Lake Bypass connecting Sector V and Chingrighata crossing has been beautified and properly maintained by the authority. Earlier, the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) was responsible for the maintenance of the median stretch of Maa flyover.

The state urban development has approved a fund of Rs 2.5 crore to NDITA for beautification and maintenance of the entire bottom portion of Maa flyover. "The median stretch below Maa flyover will have a fresh green look with pocket gardens and tree plantation. Besides the overall beautification, there will be fencing on both sides to protect the greenery and landscape," said a govt official. TOI on Wednesday moved along the median stretch of the flyover and noticed several stretches to be in sorry state with waste dumped over at many places.

A meeting was recently held which was attended by Kolkata Police, KMDA, KMC, WBTC, and others, where Joint CP (Traffic & Crime) Rupesh Kumar reminded KMDA of a long-pending proposal to set up pedestrian median iron fencing between Mathpukur and Park Circus.

Police said that the delay in implementing the proposal was making the PC Connector extremely risky for pedestrians with infringements and jaywalking taking place at Tiljala and China Town. It was then the KMDA informed that the median stretch was handed over to the NDITA for maintenance. NDITA was formed in 2006 to spruce up infrastructure and look after civic amenities of Sector V. Prior to this, Sector V was a part of the erstwhile Bidhannagar municipality along with the other four sectors of Salt Lake.
