  • 12 Jalpaiguri: An abandoned baby in Jalpaiguri has found a new home in Kansas.

The child was left at the hospital by her mother after her birth 16 months ago. The NRI couple had applied for a baby girl from Specialized Adoption Agency (SAA) in Jalpaiguri in 2022 through Authorized Foreign Adoption Agency (AFAA). When SAA got the infant from the hospital, it considered this American couple.

The process was initiated, in which the couple had to meet numerous norms. Last May, the final hearing for the adoption was conducted online, and in Dec, the NRI couple finally got clearance to adopt the baby.

On Thursday, Jalpaiguri ADM Rounak Agarwal handed over the little girl to the couple at the DM's office in the presence of Jalpaiguri SAA superintendent Gautam Das and Sudip Bhadra, head of the District Child Protection Unit.

AFAA will now keep strict watch on how the baby is raised for the next few years.

"We will miss her as she was growing up here, and we had grown very fond of her. But a bright future awaits her in the US and it is reason enough for us to feel joyous as well," said Das.
