12 Kolkata: Judicial officer Chaitali Chatterjee (Das) will be sworn in as an additional judge of Calcutta High Court on Friday.
Her appointment to the post for two years was announced by a gazette notification on Wednesday. "In exercise of the power conferred by Clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Chaitali Chatterjee (Das) to be an Additional Judge of Calcutta High Court for two years with effect from the date she assumes charge of her office," it was stated in the notification.
The Supreme Court Collegium in Jan 2024 recommended her name for appointment as a judge of the Calcutta HC. Chatterjee (Das) enrolled in the Bar in 1993 and practised at the HC as well as the city civil court for around 16 years. After joining the judicial service in '09, she held various positions and was last posted as the registrar general of the Calcutta HC.
At present, out of the 72 approved strength of judges at the Calcutta HC, it has a working strength of 43 and 29 vacancies. Two judges—Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Bibhas Ranjan De—of the high court are going to retire on Sept 15, 2025, and Nov 5, 2025, respectively.
