• Snowfall predicted in Darjeeling, fog alert for South Bengal: IMD

  • Darjeeling will likely experience snowfall on Thursday and Friday and light rain is predicted for Jalpaiguri and Kalimpong, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Dense fog warnings have been issued for Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar, potentially reducing visibility to between 50 and 199 metres in the mornings.  According to the IMD, the rest of northern West Bengal will have dry weather.

South Bengal faces dense fog warnings in North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Burdwan, and Nadia, with some fog expected in other districts as well.  This fog may cause traffic disruptions, and caution is advised. No rain is predicted for South Bengal.  According to Alipore Regional Commissioner Somnath Dutta, the abundant water vapour entering the state from the North Bay of Bengal is the cause of the fog.

Winter’s grip on West Bengal is loosening, with temperatures remaining above normal for most of the month.  Kolkata’s minimum temperature on Wednesday was 21.8 degrees Celsius, 4.1 degrees above average, while Tuesday’s maximum reached 29.1 degrees, slightly above normal.  While a slight dip of two to three degrees is expected in North and South Bengal over the next two days, it won’t bring a significant chill, and temperatures are predicted to rise again by two degrees shortly after, said Dutta.
