123 Kolkata: The four-day Great Backyard Bird Count, the biggest birding event in the world, kicked off in Bengal on Friday with more than 100 participants.
"Till 8 pm on Friday, 389 checklists — a list of birds that one can see, hear and identify — and 360 species were uploaded on e-bird, an online database of bird observations," said Santanu Manna of Birdwatchers' Society, who is also one of the coordinators of the event from Bengal.
The highest number of species — 161 — has so far been found in Darjeeling, he added. North 24 Parganas is leading in terms of checklist with 81 entries. A preliminary data will be compiled and released on Monday.
The event was started in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society.
