Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Friday granted permission to RSS to hold a gathering at SAI Complex in East Burdwan's Talit on Feb 16. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat is scheduled to address the gathering.
Justice Amrita Sinha allowed the organisation to use sound boxes during the gathering after police denied permission for the use of loudspeakers on the grounds that Madhyamik examinations were on.
Justice Sinha, while noting that the nearest school to the venue was 500 metres away from the outer wall of the complex and the proposed meeting was on a Sunday when there was no examination scheduled, directed the petitioner to keep the sound limit to a minimum.
Advocate General Kishore Datta opposed the RSS prayer and submitted that the police permission was denied based on a 2022 prohibition order passed by state govt. The state environment department, via the order, had imposed a blanket ban on use of loudspeakers from three days prior to secondary and higher secondary board examinations until the end of the texts. The AG said that the order had been passed following a 1998 HC directive.
