  • 123 Kolkata: Police from the South Suburban (Jadavpur) division have identified 18 dark spots in Golf Green and Regent Park where new CCTVs will be set up. The identification of these spots that include stretches on Uday Shankar Sarani, Graham Road, and Jubilee Park were carried out following the discovery of two bodies of murder victims in poorly illuminated stretches of roads in the belt.

Tenders for installation of five HD vision CCTV cameras in four such dark spots under the Golf Green police station area were floated on Friday. These spots are on the eastern and western sides of Yuvak Brinda Club on Graham Road, Shantigarh Jheel ghat, and a spot at Jubilee Park. The police are also in talks with Kolkata Municipal Corporation to increase number of street lights at some of these spots.

At the last monthly crime conference, senior officers called for improvement in CCTV coverage of localities to act as a deterrent and solve crimes if they do take place. Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma had called for identification of crime-prone areas or zones in the city and brought under CCTV surveillance. The Golf Green-Regent Park coverage is part of this effort.

"The twin localities have both posh houses and slums. A large number of senior citizens live here. The crowded MR Bangur Hospital is also located there. The two gory murders of women has shaken the neighbourhood. While Graham's Road illumination and clean-up to turn it into a walking street was a beginning, we have to ensure that residents in all corners of Golf Green feel safe," said a divisional officer.

The commissioner of police has also instructed that police should be visible, thereby calling for more frequent patrolling. Beat patrolling has reduced in recent years due to workforce crunch in the force.
