• Bengal Police SOP for probing cybercrimes
    Times of India | 15 February 2025
  • Kolkata: Evidence in a cybercrime should be properly collected and preserved and only trained cops should handle them. Electronic items seized during a probe must undergo forensic test at authorised cyber forensic facilities following court directives: These are some of the norms in the 19-page investigation SOP for cybercrimes—social media, financial and cryptocurrency frauds and cases under IT Act—that Bengal Police prepared following a Calcutta HC observation about lacunae in the registration and probe of digital offences.

"The SOP aims at standardising probe procedures and preventing procedural lapses in cybercrimes," said an officer. The Bhawani Bhawan SOP came after the HC criticised cops for inadequate handling of cybercrimes, especially one in Nadia, where an officer didn't invoke IT Act after a rape survivor's photos were put online.
