  • 12 Howrah: A masked gang on Saturday broke open an ATM machine with gas-cutter and stole around Rs 16 lakh at Alampur in the Sankrail police station area under Howrah City Police.

A Howrah City Police officer stated that a police vehicle patrolled the area around 4:30 am and noticed nothing unusual. It is suspected that the robbery took place around 5 am. The police are trying to identify the culprits by collecting CCTV footage from the ATM counter.

According to police sources, the criminals attempted to break it using a chisel and a hammer. They then set it on fire with a gas-cutter. Local sources reported that pieces of the broken ATM machine were scattered inside the counter and on the road. The police recovered a gas cutter and a Bolero vehicle from the nearby National Highway 16 connecting Dhulagari-Jujarsaha Road. It is believed that the miscreants had arrived in this vehicle.
