Kolkata: A special NIA court has sentenced a Birbhum man to 10 years in prison for a blast on Feb 20, 2019, at his residence in Birbhum's Gangpur village. Judge Shubhendu Saha also fined Bablu Mondal Rs 10,000 after finding him guilty under the Explosive Substances Act on Thursday.
The blast originated from explosives stored in a tin box. Although no one was injured in the incident, police later found more explosives stored in hidden compartments at Mondal's house.
Initially investigated by the CID, the case was later transferred to NIA by the Calcutta High Court. The NIA investigation revealed that the explosives had been stored at Mondal's house since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. NIA lawyer Debashish Mallik Chaudhary said the case was registered under IPC sections 286, 120B, and the Arms Act, and 28 witnesses testified during the trial.
Mondal's two sons, Mrityunjay and Niranjan, were initially arrested but later released on bail. After the blast in 2019, opposition parties had alleged that Mondal had links with Trinamool. TMC, however, had denied the allegations.
