Kolkata: A couple with their teenage daughter were killed around 7.30 pm on Sunday when a truck struck their scooter from behind on Belgharia Expressway near Kolkata airport, leading to the trio coming under the sand-laden vehicle's wheels. The victims were returning home from Dakshineswar temple and all three were wearing helmets.
Joydip Dasgupta (52), his wife Nipa (46) and daughter Srijani (14) were returning to their home at Durganagar from the Dunlop end of the expressway when the accident happened at the bifurcation of Belgharia Expressway where one road takes a left turn towards Barasat and another leads to a small flyover.
Cops said Dasgupta was riding at a moderate speed along the middle lane and tried to take the rightmost lane to climb the flyover when the truck tried to veer left from the rightmost lane when the accident happened.
"CCTV footage shows the scooter had slowed down to take the right lane when the truck hit it from behind. At the impact, the scooter was tossed up in the air and all three riders fell," said an officer.
Aishwarya Sagar, deputy commissioner of Bidhannagar Commissionerate's airport division, said: "All three died at the spot. It was a tragic accident. The driver — Mithun Singha from Burdwan — was arrested and the truck seized."
Dasgupta's brother Abhijit said, "My brother was a steady rider." He said Joydip was a private tutor, Nipa was a homemaker and Srijani was a class IX student.
