  • 12 Kolkata: The Met office has predicted thunderstorm in Kolkata and other parts of south Bengal between Wednesday and Thursday. The rain spell in the city could be light to moderate. The mercury could dip slightly after the rain.

"Rainfall/thunderstorm activity is expected over some districts of south Bengal during Feb 19-20 due to the presence of a favourable wind pattern and strong moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal at lower tropospheric levels," said a special weather bulletin from IMD.

At present, the southwesterly wind system is bringing enough moisture into the land. Along with adequate heating, it is expected to trigger thunderstorm activities. The high moisture content has already started pushing the mercury up.

"There is excessive moisture in the lower level as the southwesterly wind system is bringing in moisture, which will trigger rain. For Kolkata, the possible window period is between the second half of Wednesday and Thursday night," said HR Biswas, head of the weather forecast section at RMC, Kolkata. Weather officials said Feb rain is not unusual, and climatologically, the city's mean number of rainy days in the month is 1.7 days, with a mean total rain amount of 20.9 mm during the month. "We can also expect a slight dip in the mercury, particularly in the maximum temperature after the showers," added Biswas.
