  • Midnapore: The state animal husbandry department is dispatching a team of experts to a poultry farm in west Midnapore's Debra following reports of multiple chicken deaths at the facility.

Hundreds of dead chickens have been found lying in a poultry farm in Chaltageria, within the Debra block of west Midnapore district. Locals raised an alarm due to the foul odour emanating from the site.

Deputy director of animal husbandry Chinmoy Chakraborty confirmed that a complaint had been received and that a team would be sent on Tuesday morning to investigate the matter.

Farm owner Ishwar Samanta said that the farm is operated on lease and that the company from which the chicks were sourced has been informed. The company alleges negligence on the part of the farm owner, though he denies any wrongdoing.

Samanta maintains that the company supplying the chicks will manage the situation. However, sources suggest that the supplier denies any link to bird flu and attributes the deaths to negligence by the farm owner.
