Kolkata: Calcutta High Court refused to interfere in a case alleging environmental violation in the Deucha-Pachami coal mining project on Tuesday. Justice Amrita Sinha noted that the respondent wanted to make a comparative chart to show that the averments made in the writ petition were the same as the ones in the PIL (public interest litigation) pending before the bench of Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam. The petitioner, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), claimed that the petition had nothing to do with the compensation issue raised in PILs before the CJ. The petition claimed that no comprehensive EIA (environmental impact assessment) was conducted for the coal mining project despite its classification as a greenfield project. The matter will be next heard on March 5.
