  • 12 Kolkata: Bengal govt on Monday issued a new notification regarding state anthem "Banglar Mati, Banglar Jol", a song by Rabindranath Tagore, making it clear that it would be sung exactly the way the poet composed it in 1905.

Tagore had written "Bangalir Pran, Bangalir Mon, Bangalir Ghare Jato Bhai Bon" but it was sung in some state functions as "Banglar Pran, Banglar Mon, Bangalir Ghare Jato Bhai Bon."

In an order, chief secretary Manoj Pant said the state song will be played at govt functions for a tenure of one minute. Dignitaries and all persons will need to stand in attention when the national anthem and state song are being played and mass singing of the national anthem and state song should be encouraged, the order added.

Earlier, there was criticism as Tagore's original song was changed in some programmes. Pant's order said henceforth, the declared version of the state song would be "Banglar Mati, Banglar Jol, Banglar Bayu, Banglar Fol, Punyo Hauk, Punyo Hauk, Punya Hauk He Bhagoban. Bangalir Pran, Bangalir Mon, Bangalir Ghare Jato Bhai Bon, Ek Houk, Ek Houk, Ek Houk He Bhagoban."

Tagore's ode to Mother Bengal, this song was composed in 1905 in support of the Bangabhanga Rodh Movement against the 1905 Partition of Bengal.
