  • Kolkata: The day after Bengal STF arrested another employee of the gun shop in Dalhousie in connection with the ammunition supply case, Kolkata Police said it may look into its own men to ascertain if they played the role they were expected to play in order to stop such illegalities. Bengal STF's crackdown exposed potential police oversight of licensed weapon shops in Kolkata, prompting an internal investigation by Lalbazar. Two of the six accused nabbed so far are employees of the gun shop, NC Daw.

The STF operation on Friday led to the seizure of 190 cartridges and a firearm from four suspects in Jibantala, South 24 Parganas. Two more arrests followed, revealing a months-long operation of illegal weapons and ammunition sales outside the licensed premises.

"We have ordered a comprehensive probe into the incident, including possible ne-gligence by our personnel. Appropriate action will be taken if oversight or failures are found," said an officer.

Kolkata has fewer than 10 licensed weapon shops, all under the supervision of Kolkata Police's Reserve Force. The Arms Arrest Section is specifically tasked with monitoring inventory and sales at these establishments.

The probe revealed significant inventory discrepancies at the Dalhousie shop. "The monthly verification should have detected these irregularities," said a former officer.
