  • Kolkata: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said: "There was a murder at RG Kar Medical College but the accused person was not hanged. Our police can solve a case in two months and secure orders for hanging from the court." She was speaking at the state assembly.

"We have brought the Aparajita Bill keeping such cases in mind. They (the opposition) question us about the law and order in the state. Look at you. The rape victims were burnt alive in your state (opposition ruled). I can refer to cases like Bilkis Bano. The witnesses were not even allowed to reach the court," she said.

Earlier, the state and the CBI both moved Calcutta HC seeking death penalty for arrested Sanjay Roy. The HC later ordered that the CBI's appeal would be heard as they had investigated the case.

Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment by the trial court. It was submitted on behalf of the CBI that at the time of hearing on the point of sentence, it had requested the trial court to award maximum punishment, that is, punishment of death.
