  • Midnapore: A team from the animal husbandry department on Tuesday visited the poultry farm at Chaltageria village in West Midnapore following reports of chicken deaths at the facility. The doctors who performed autopsies on the carcasses allayed bird flu fears and said the deaths occurred due to a disease called Ranikhet.

Chinmoy Chakraborty, deputy director of animal husbandry, said, "The four vaccines that should have been given to the chickens were not given, which led to the birds contracting Ranikhet disease."

Two more chickens are being taken to the testing lab for further examination to determine if there are any other causes. According to the animal husbandry department, approximately 500 chickens died from the disease. The farm owner, Ishwar Samanta, had procured the birds from a private company. The sudden death of the chickens caused panic in the area.
