  • Kolkata: A Madhyamik student showed sheer determination by completing her life science exam from a hospital bed after sustaining injuries when a ceiling fan fell on her head during the test.

Nandini Makal, a student of Batanagar Jatiya Siksha Mandir, was 30 minutes into taking the test at Batanagar Sri Ramkrishna Ashram Vivekananda Vidyamandir in Maheshtala when the accident happened, causing severe bleeding and trauma. Makal was initially taken to a health centre, which provided first aid and sent her back to the exam centre. She tried to resume writing but collapsed on the table. She was taken to Vidyasagar Hospital, around 14 km from the centre, which referred her to MR Bangur Hospital.

OC of Maheshtala PS Tapas Singha escorted the girl, carrying her exam sheet, question paper, and stationery. Once doctors at MR Bangur Hospital treated her, she demanded to be allowed to finish the exam, and was permitted. She resumed writing from bed at 1.10 pm. "I prepared well for this paper and couldn't let my hard work go to waste," she told TOI.

Amit Bhattacharya, the headmaster of the exam venue, said he was apologetic for the incident and was thankful that the girl was out of danger. "Luckily, only one blade of the fan touched her. We checked everything before the exam, but still, the incident occurred. We have repaired the fan," he said.

West Bengal Board of Secondary Education has served show-cause notices to five individuals: the centre secretary, officer in charge, member of the district monitoring team, district joint convenor, and district convenor. A board official said, "Ahead of the exams, we asked to check all centres properly. Such incidents are not desirable."
