Registration delay: 300 CU 1st-yrs miss 1st-sem exam

Kolkata: Over 300 Calcutta University first-year students missed their first semester examinations since they could not register in time. Many of them had changed colleges by taking advantage of the admission portal being reopened multiple times this year, which continued until the end of Nov, resulting in issues with timely registration.
The last date for college registration given by CU was Nov 30.
Adrija Bandyopadhyay had shifted to a north Kolkata college from another during the final phase of admission at the end of Nov. "My registration was made by the college where I first took admission. When I changed colleges, I applied for the transfer certificate but they delayed the process, and by the time I got the registration number, the final date of submitting the form was over. The college told me to visit the controller section of the university. I did, and followed every instruction given by the university. But I eventually got to know that I would not be permitted to sit for the exam," she said.
A student from a central Kolkata college faced the same issue of receiving the transfer certificate late.
Arghadip Pal, a student of another college in north Kolkata, said, "I took admission in 2023 but I dropped out and took fresh admission this year, applying for fresh registration. But it was cancelled as double registration was not permitted, which I didn't know."
According to CU sources, there are multiple reasons for this issue. Some students registered at one college, dropped a year, and joined another college as fresh candidates, applying for fresh registration. Meanwhile, some missed the final chance to participate in the registration process or were unable to fill forms in time. CU interim VC Santa Datta said, "We have given enough chances to the colleges and students by extending the last date of admission. A section of college authorities and students were reluctant about following proper procedure."
An official of a north Kolkata College said, "We have an extreme staff shortage but the workload has been increasing day by day. This year, the UG admission process went on until the first week of Dec. At the same time, their registrations, issuing transfer certificates, everything was being done with the same staff strength. These things need to be streamlined first."
