Kolkata: A 45-year-old Trinamool functionary, Abdul Kader Mollah, was attacked with sharp weapons by a group of masked men at his Basirhat house in North 24-Parganas on Friday evening. His family members were also injured in the incident. It is suspected that Mollah was attacked following his protest against illegal land grabs in the area.
Mollah was initially taken to Basirhat District Hospital with severe injuries but was later shifted to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Police have launched an investigation and are searching for the culprits.
Locals said Mollah lives at Bashjhari under Sakchura Bagundi gram panchayat with his wife, mother, and six-year-old child. At 8pm on Friday, at least 12 people barged into Mollah's house and attacked him with sharp weapons in front of his family members. "When his elderly mother and wife rushed to save him, they were also attacked. Hearing their screams, neighbours gathered at the scene. The attackers then fired five rounds in the air before fleeing," said a neighbour.
"We are examining whether an old rivalry played a role in the attack," said a senior officer from Basirhat District Police.
