  • 123 Kolkata: Yet another round of raids was conducted by the Bengal Special Task Force (STF) at a Dalhousie gun shop this weekend, marking the second consecutive day of investigations into alleged ammunition stock manipulation. The sleuths were at the shop for six hours, and counting, till reports last came in.

The raid at the Narsingh Chunder Daw gun shop involved a thorough inspection by STF sleuths, accompanied by Ordnance Factory officials and the shop's owner. Two arrested employees from this shop were also present during the operation to assist with the investigation.

"A team of experts from the central armoury accompanied our STF unit. An inventory was made by counting the firearms and cartridges in the shop. The central armoury experts are being consulted to identify the types of cartridges present and the firearms they are used in," said an officer. "We are ascertaining if supply, stock, and sales in the past year match with data at the central armoury," said an SPleading the operations.

The investigation gained momentum following last week's arrest of five individuals in Jibantala, South 24 Parganas, where authorities seized 190 rounds of cartridges and a double-barrelled gun. The subsequent probe revealed these items were sourced from the licensed arms shop in BBD Bagh, leading to the arrest of two shop employees.

STF officials report that a few shop employees were involved in illegal sales of ammunition and firearms, though the exact quantity remains undetermined. Investigators have already questioned the owners of this shop and all the employees working here.

"The probe has uncovered a sophisticated operation where transactions were allegedly conducted using legitimate licences. Our detectives are compiling a comprehensive list of licence holders to trace the paper trail of the trafficked weapons and ammunition," said an investigating officer.
