123 Kolkata: Terror accused Biplab Biswas alias Abdullah, arrested by STF in Thanapara area on Feb 20, provided shelter to Bangladeshi militants and was trying to create fake documents for them, said a police officer on Monday. Sources said Biswas's name emerged after the arrest of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) militant Shad Radi in Assam.
"Intelligence reports indicate that the activities of ABT have increased in north Bengal and Assam in recent months, and Biswas was a key player in Nadia," said an officer. Documents and digital evidence recovered from Biswas indicated that ABT was trying to establish a terror cell in Bengal.
"The accused failed to provide satisfactory explanations regarding suspicious financial transactions and communications with known militant elements," said a senior STF officer. Preliminary investigation revealed that Biswas maintained regular contact with two previously arrested militants from Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas.
Biswas's lawyer, meanwhile, alleged that proper procedure was not followed during his client's arrest. "My client is being harassed under the guise of interrogation. He only made two business-related calls to one of the accused," he said.
